Conditions on arrival of Engine 9-2 & Tower 5

Just after 9am the Box Alarm was struck out for 227 Cherry St, Sharon Hill for a reported Garage Fire. The assignment brought in Companies 09, 05 (Glenolden), 01 (Folcroft), RIT-19 (Lansdowne), and Mercy EMS Units. Within seconds Engine 09-2 hit the street and was advised Police were on location advising a working fire and possibly several dogs trapped. Engine 09-2 arrived in the area and hit the hydrant at Cherry & Poplar St, where a smoke condition was visible in the street as well as a large column of smoke from the rear of a residence. Telesquirt01 was advised to finish the hydrant hookup. Engine 09-2 reported a 1 Story Garage, approx. 30x30 well involved, with crews going in service with a 2 1/2in. handline. Captain Miller assummed command of the incident and established Cherry St. Command. Tower05's crew arrived shortly after and was tasked with forcing the gate to the rear yard and assisting with stretching the 2 1/2. The structure had no exposures and it quickly became apparent the roof structure was rapidly failing and collapsing so all companies were ordered to a defensive operation. Within 10mins the bulk of the fire was knocked down and the roof structure had failed and collapsed inwards into the garage. Engine 09-1 & Tower 05 assisted with stretching an additional line and manpower on the initial line. Engine 09-3 took position in a rear alleyway behind the garage. By the 20min mark the fire was placed under control with all hands still in service for overhaul and hot spots. Company 09 remained on location for several hours assisting Fire Investigators.
